Affordable Wireless Heating Control with your Smartphone or Raspberry Pi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As the days begin to shorten and the leaves start to fall thoughts turn to the winter ahead and the ever increasing energy bills. \u00a0Heating control is a problem that&#8217;s made for home automation to solve and there&#8217;s always plenty of advice on our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/automatedhome.com\/vbulletin\/forumdisplay.php?13-Heating-Control\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Heating Control Forum<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hello Max<\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0One solution that&#8217;s being discussed in there more and more\u00a0is &#8216;MAX!&#8217; from German manufacturer &#8216;eQ-3&#8217;. \u00a0A system of inexpensive components including wireless battery operated TRV&#8217;s that easily retro-fit\u00a0to your existing radiators\u00a0without the need for a plumber, or to drain your system. \u00a0Once MAX! is installed, it\u00a0will control each radiators motorised valve individually, creating a zoned heating system with higher efficiency and in turn reduced bills.<\/p>\n<p>It also has the added benefit of allowing you to control your heating on the move with a free\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/gb\/app\/max!-eq-3\/id482014734?mt=8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">iOS app<\/a>\u00a0 for your\u00a0iPhone \/ iPad \u00a0plus an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.eq_3.max_eq3&amp;hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Android version<\/a>\u00a0too. \u00a0The system uses the 868 MHz frequency to communicate between its modules.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/automatedhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/MAX-Thermostat.jpg?ssl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/automatedhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/MAX-Thermostat.jpg?resize=200%2C199&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"eQ-3 MAX! Wireless Wall Thermostat<\/strong>\u00a0(~\u00a325) &#8211;\u00a0The wall thermostat is more business like than handsome, but it&#8217;s still looks better than most. \u00a0It can control up to eight MAX! radiator thermostats in any one room and has an internal sensor that measures the temperature in the room and transmits it to the radiator thermostats.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/automatedhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/MAX-Radiator-Thermostat.jpg?ssl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-18097 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/automatedhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/MAX-Radiator-Thermostat.jpg?resize=150%2C193&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"eQ-3 MAX! Wireless Radiator Thermostat<\/strong>\u00a0(~\u00a325) &#8211;\u00a0The Radiator Thermostat is responsible for regulating your radiators. All configuration settings are made with the MAX! Software and different settings can be made for each room. Communication between MAX! components is bi-directional. This ensures that the information sent reaches the recipient. \u00a0There&#8217;s also a &#8216;Plus&#8217; version of the thermostat available for an additional \u00a35 with a more comprehensive LCD display and local control. \u00a0Both units use 2 x AA cells and e-Q3 quote battery life as 2 years with 2 operations per day.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/automatedhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/MAX-Cube.jpg?ssl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/automatedhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/MAX-Cube.jpg?resize=200%2C220&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"eQ-3 MAX! Cube Ethernet Gateway\" width=\"200\" height=\"220\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>eQ-3 MAX! Cube LAN Gateway<\/strong> (~\u00a345) &#8211;\u00a0The Cube is the gateway between your LAN and the RF comms of the MAX! system. \u00a0An Ethernet port connects to your network and power is provided via a USB socket. \u00a0Once attached you can configure the system\u00a0with the MAX! software. \u00a0In addition you can monitor the\u00a0status of your system and control it from your PC or Smartphone \/ Tablet across the Internet via eQ-3&#8217;s server. \u00a0Local control can be carried out without the need for an Internet connection. \u00a0The Cube seems to ship with 3 years service included in the price. \u00a0This means you&#8217;ll have to pay for the service from year four. \u00a0eQ-3 says the sub prices are set by their distribution partners but from what we can see they&#8217;re not expensive (a few Euros per year?).<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/automatedhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/MAX-sensor.jpg?ssl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-18127\" style=\"border: 0px; margin: 2px;\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/automatedhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/MAX-sensor.jpg?resize=125%2C264&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"eQ-3 MAX! Wireless Window Sensor<\/strong> (~\u00a320) &#8211;\u00a0The Window Sensor lets the system know when a door or window has been opened allowing the\u00a0Radiator Thermostats to automatically reduce the temperature to save energy, and\u00a0increase it again once the window or door has been closed.<\/p>\n<p>The value of the drop in temperature can be set separately for each room in the MAX! Software.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/automatedhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/MAX-switch.jpg?ssl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-18128\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/automatedhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/MAX-switch.jpg?resize=200%2C280&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"eQ-3 MAX! Eco Switch<\/strong>\u00a0(~\u00a320) &#8211;\u00a0The MAX! Eco switch allows you to set back the temperature in all your rooms with a single button press when you leave home. \u00a0When you return you can also set all rooms back to auto mode by pressing the button again. \u00a0The battery operated wireless device can be mounted almost anywhere and can be stuck to the wall with adhesive tape.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s also a\u00a0Plug Adaptor for controlling electric and water heaters but it appears to only be available with a European socket design. \u00a0It&#8217;s unclear whether this could also be used for boiler control, one aspect of the system that seems to be lacking.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/automatedhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/MAX-iPhone.png?ssl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-18003 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/automatedhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/MAX-iPhone.png?resize=125%2C242&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"eQ-3 MAX! Smartphone App for iPhone &amp; Android\" width=\"125\" height=\"242\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/automatedhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/MAX-iPhone.png?w=500&amp;ssl=1 500w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/automatedhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/MAX-iPhone.png?resize=155%2C300&amp;ssl=1 155w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 125px) 100vw, 125px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Language Barrier<\/strong> &#8211; Currently the apps are only available in German and they also use the German time zone which can&#8217;t be changed. \u00a0We asked\u00a0eQ-3 if there are any plans to remedy this and they told us&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;The apps are only available in German language currently. Changing the local time is planned in a future software release but we have no estimated date for the release of an English version.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Integrating and Hacking<\/strong> &#8211; There&#8217;s no API for MAX! and it doesn&#8217;t look like there will be one in the future. \u00a0There is a third party Control4 Driver available from Extra Vegetables if that&#8217;s your home automation controller. For the DIY hacker there&#8217;s support for MAX! built into the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/fhem.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fhem<\/a>\u00a0open source software package. \u00a0You can control the actuators\u00a0using several hardware devices from Busware including an Arduino module and\u00a0this <a href=\"http:\/\/busware.de\/tiki-index.php?page=COC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Raspberry Pi Extension Board<\/a>. \u00a0There is more information available on the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.hekkers.net\/tag\/elv-max\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MAX!
