{"id":20631,"date":"2014-01-01T12:21:05","date_gmt":"2014-01-01T12:21:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/automatedhome.com\/?p=20631"},"modified":"2017-03-02T18:16:59","modified_gmt":"2017-03-02T18:16:59","slug":"new-years-resolution-backup-your-gmail-files","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/automatedhome.com\/tutorials\/new-years-resolution-backup-your-gmail-files.html","title":{"rendered":"New Years Resolution: Backup Your Gmail &#038; Files"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The New Year is always a great time to make some changes and for your digital home at least, none more important than backing up. \u00a0In 2012 we wrote about using <a href=\"https:\/\/automatedhome.com\/diary\/secure-your-google-account-now-heres-how.html\" target=\"_blank\">gmvault<\/a> to take a copy of your Gmail but around a month ago Google finally added the ability to back it up (and Google Calendar data too) to the rest of their &#8216;Take Out&#8217; service.<\/p>\n<p>We visited the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/settings\/takeout\" target=\"_blank\">Take Out <\/a>site and requested our files. \u00a0The following day we received the email that our archive\u00a0was ready (you&#8217;ve got a week to download before it&#8217;s deleted). \u00a0We grabbed the 11.5GB of data (of which our Gmail was 9.28GB).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/dp\/B007IA3S22\/?tag=ah4-21\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-20698 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/automatedhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/wd-2tb.jpg?resize=250%2C161&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"WD My Passport 2TB Portable Hard Drive\" width=\"250\" height=\"161\" \/><\/a>While you&#8217;re at it take the opportunity to secure your local data too. \u00a0We use <a href=\"http:\/\/www.2brightsparks.com\/syncback\/syncback-hub.html\" target=\"_blank\">SyncBackSE<\/a> on our <a href=\"https:\/\/automatedhome.com\/reviews\/diy-windows-home-server-build-jukebox-mkii.html\" target=\"_blank\">Windows Home Server Jukebox<\/a> to mirror the important stuff to our Drobo. \u00a0Strangely the free version of SyncBack won&#8217;t work on our WHS box (a domestic OS) whilst it will on our SBS2008 (a commercial one). \u00a0Anyway, SyncBackSE is well worth the \u00a329 and the license allows for &#8216;home use&#8217; on up to five computers. \u00a0Also check out the open source <a href=\"http:\/\/sourceforge.net\/projects\/freefilesync\/\" target=\"_blank\">FreeFileSync<\/a> and take a look at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/clonezilla.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Clonezilla<\/a> for full drive images.<\/p>\n<p>Lastly you&#8217;ll need an off-site backup and for that we use this little 2TB USB3 drive, updating it once a month then storing it at work. \u00a0There are plenty of cloud based off-site backup solutions too if you have the bandwidth and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.code42.com\/crashplan\/\" target=\"_blank\">CrashPlan<\/a> for example will allow you to backup your data to a friend or family members house over the Internet.<\/p>\n<p>What ever method you use, just make sure to start backing up. \u00a0Someday it could just be the best new years resolution you ever made.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gmailblog.blogspot.co.uk\/2013\/12\/download-copy-of-your-gmail-and-google.html\" target=\"_blank\">Google Gmail Blog<\/a> \u00a0: \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/s\/?_encoding=UTF8&amp;camp=1634&amp;creative=19450&amp;keywords=usb%20external%20hard%20drive&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;qid=1388578576&amp;rh=n%3A430544031%2Ck%3Ausb%20external%20hard%20drive&amp;rnid=1642204031&amp;tag=ah4-21\" target=\"_blank\">Backup Drives<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Want More?<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/ottomate\">Follow us<\/a>\u00a0on Twitter,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/AutomatedHomeUK\" target=\"_blank\">Like us<\/a>\u00a0on Facebook, or subscribe to our\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/feeds2.feedburner.com\/automatedhome\">RSS feed<\/a>.
