\ngoogle_color_link = \"52a79f\"; \ngoogle_color_url = \"CFFFDF\"; \ngoogle_color_text = \"000000\"; \n\/\/--> \n<\/script>\n<script language=\"javascript\"  src=\"http:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/show_ads.js\"><\/script>\n<\/div>Does your home or office need a backup broadband service for those frustrating outages?\u00a0 If you\u2019ve answered yes to any of these questions then the new Vodafone USB Stick 3G Modem may be for you.\u00a0 Read on for our video, photos and full review of this mini marvel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What Is It &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong>Vodafone have had a USB 3G modem for a while now, but this new \u201cstick\u201d form factor is smaller and easier to pack than the traditional pebble on a lead design.\u00a0 A re-branded Huawei e172, the unit isn\u2019t much bigger than the size of an older USB thumb drive, so you\u2019re not going to get anything much smaller or lighter than this.<\/p>\n<p>Because of its width, some more inaccessibly USB ports may not allow the unit to be plugged in (like the MacBook Air).\u00a0 Also using the unit with USB sockets that are close together can mean access to the second one is blocked.\u00a0 Luckily the Vodafone package includes an little USB extender lead that overcomes both these potential issues.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a list of the standards supported by the modem&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>3G (UMTS\/HSDPA) frequency supported \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 2100 MHz<\/li>\n<li>EDGE frequency supported \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 900, 1800 and 1900MHz<\/li>\n<li>GPRS frequency supported \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 900, 1800 and 1900MHz<\/li>\n<li>Support for USA \/ Canada \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Yes for GPRS\/EDGE access at 1900MHz<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.awin1.com\/cread.php?s=87544&amp;v=1846&amp;q=69013&amp;r=77191\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Vodafone USB Stick 3G Broadband Modem\" alt=\"Vodafone USB Stick 3G Broadband Modem\" src=\"\/images\/news\/vodafone_modem_2.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>How Fast?<\/strong>According to Vodafone their regular HSDPA service provides data rates of up to 1.8Mbps \u2013 offering typical speeds of 0.8 \u2013 1.3Mbps.\u00a0 Their new 7.2 service offers typical speeds of 1.7 &#8211; 5.5Mbps and upstream speeds are improving too with HSUPA technology now providing up to 1.44Mbps, a upload speed most ADSL users can only dream of!<\/p>\n<p>However for now the 7.2 service is only available in the following central London postcodes and UK airports &#8211; E1, E1W, E14, EC1, EC2, EC3, EC4, NW1, SW1, W1, W2, W8, W9, W10, W11, W14, WC1, WC2.\u00a0 Airports &#8211; Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton, Stansted, London City, Southampton, Bristol, Birmingham, East Midlands, Liverpool, Manchester, Belfast City, Belfast International, Cardiff, Norwich.\u00a0 The general 3G (red) and GPRS (blue) coverage is shown for the UK in the map below.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.awin1.com\/cread.php?s=87544&amp;v=1846&amp;q=69013&amp;r=77191\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Vodafone USB Stick 3G Broadband Modem\" alt=\"Vodafone USB Stick 3G Broadband Modem\" src=\"\/images\/news\/vodafone_modem_1.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Installing &amp; The application must shut down&#8221;).\u00a0 A quick call to Vodafone\u2019s business support got us in touch with a guy that knew what the problem was.\u00a0 Although we were asked to authenticate during install with our admin users\/password it seems you cannot run the software from a non-administrator account without first running it from the admin account and activating it.<\/p>\n<p>You really don\u2019t need the Vodafone software after this if you click the checkbox &#8216;Show modem status in menu bar&#8217; in network preferences.\u00a0 This adds a little telephone icon to your menu bar, which gives you fast right-click access to starting and stopping the connection as well as displaying your time on-line.<\/p>\n<p>We found a newer version of the Mac software on the Vodafone site (VodafoneMCInstaller.2.08.05.04) and installed that.\u00a0 You can download the latest drivers for both windows and Mac from the Vodafone site <a href=\"http:\/\/www.business.vodafone.com\/site\/bus\/public\/enuk\/support\/10_productsupport\/laptop_connectivity\/40_software\/software\/10_latest\/p_software.jsp\" target=\"_blank\">HERE<\/a> .<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.awin1.com\/cread.php?s=87544&amp;v=1846&amp;q=69013&amp;r=77191\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Vodafone USB Stick 3G Broadband Modem\" alt=\"Vodafone USB Stick 3G Broadband Modem\" src=\"\/images\/news\/vodafone_modem_3.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To use the modem insert it and wait a few seconds until one or both of the LEDs start flashing. Launch the Vodafone Mobile Connect application and a few seconds later you are online!\u00a0 Here are the various states of the two LEDs on the unit and their corresponding meanings\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Green light \u2013Blinking on and off &#8211; Modem is starting up.<\/li>\n<li>Green light \u2013 Constantly on &#8211; Connected to the GPRS Network, data is being sent and received.<\/li>\n<li>Blue light \u2013Blinking on and off &#8211; A 3G network has been found, the modem is ready to connect.<\/li>\n<li>Blue light \u2013 Constantly on &#8211; Connection to a 3G network.<\/li>\n<li>Light Blue \u2013 Constantly on &#8211; Connection to a 3G Broadband network<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.awin1.com\/cread.php?s=87544&amp;v=1846&amp;q=69013&amp;r=77191\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Vodafone USB Stick 3G Broadband Modem\" alt=\"Vodafone USB Stick 3G Broadband Modem\" src=\"\/images\/news\/vodafone_modem_4.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"220\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>According to Vodafone if you move out of 3G coverage or the signal drops out, the USB modem will automatically hand over to the GPRS network.
