{"id":3193,"date":"2009-10-27T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2009-10-27T01:00:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2020-05-10T14:59:05","modified_gmt":"2020-05-10T13:59:05","slug":"diy-windows-home-server-build-jukebox-mkii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/automatedhome.com\/reviews\/diy-windows-home-server-build-jukebox-mkii.html","title":{"rendered":"DIY Windows Home Server Build &#8211; JukeBox MkII"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s hard to believe, but its four and a half years since we built our first proper rackmount media server for the Automated Home.\u00a0 Our tutorial for the MkI is still one of our most popular articles and it&#8217;s easy to see why (you may like to read our tutorial on the <a href=\"https:\/\/automatedhome.com\/Content\/Jukebox-Server.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">original Jukebox server<\/a> first).<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s something that people are doing every day as they realise they need to move all their digital media to a central server that can be accessed by the many IP devices we have now come to rely on. The machine has served us well, but nothing lasts forever and this week we pulled the old girl out of the rack for a heart transplant.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Time to Move On<\/strong> &#8211; Two things have forced the upgrade.\u00a0 Firstly the IDE architecture of the old machine meant sourcing older, more expensive hard drives every time we needed to add more storage.\u00a0 Although we had 8 drives in the old server they included small 120GBs, 160GBs 300GBs etc.\u00a0 We could replace multiple drives with a few inexpensive 1TB disks, freeing up bays and reducing running costs.\u00a0 Lately we&#8217;d even been adding external USB drives, which is far from ideal.\u00a0 It was clear we needed to move to Serial ATA and that the IDE drive caddies would need to go.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"The Old Media Server\" src=\"\/images\/news\/jb2_old.jpg\" alt=\"The Old Media Server\" width=\"500\" height=\"356\" \/><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">The Old Server out of the rack (complete with USB drives on top) Ready for the Upgrade<\/p>\n<p><strong>4 into 3 Does Go<\/strong> &#8211; While we&#8217;ve retained the old 4U rackmount case, we&#8217;ve up&#8217;d the density of the drives in the new build with the use of a couple of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/gp\/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&amp;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.co.uk%2Fs%3Fie%3DUTF8%26x%3D0%26ref%255F%3Dnb%255Fss%26y%3D0%26field-keywords%3DIcy%2520Dock%2520MB454%26url%3Dsearch-alias%253Daps&amp;tag=markmccall&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;camp=1634&amp;creative=19450\">Icy Dock MB454 bays<\/a>.\u00a0 These allow you to squeeze 4 drives into each 3 drive space.\u00a0 You can even get a 5 into 3 version, but we should have plenty of capacity for another few years with the 8 bays this gives us, and the slightly lower density should help with cooling and increase the life of the drives.\u00a0 The Icy Docks aren&#8217;t cheap but they are a real gem.\u00a0 They give an almost Drobo-esque ease with which to add new drives (although you&#8217;ll still need to use a screw driver).<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"\/images\/news\/jb2_boxes.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Goodies Arrive\" src=\"\/images\/news\/jb2_boxes_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"Goodies Arrive\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>\u00a0 <a href=\"\/images\/news\/jb2_internal1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Empty Server Case\" src=\"\/images\/news\/jb2_internal1_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"Empty Server Case\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"\/images\/news\/jb2_internal2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Empty Server Case\" src=\"\/images\/news\/jb2_internal2_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"Empty Server Case\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>\u00a0 <a href=\"\/images\/news\/jb2_install.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"WHS Install\" src=\"\/images\/news\/jb2_install_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"WHS Install\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nClick thumbnails above for full size versions<\/p>\n<p><strong>More Power!<\/strong> &#8211; The second reason that forced the upgrade was the CPU.\u00a0 The VIA powered machine always struggled at anything more than basic file serving.\u00a0 100% CPU utilisation was commonplace and software that attempted to re-encode media on the fly for playback on our PS3 for example, sent the server into meltdown.\u00a0 We decided against one of the newer Intel i5 or i7 CPUs, instead opting for the more reasonably priced <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/gp\/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&amp;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.co.uk%2Fs%3Fie%3DUTF8%26x%3D0%26ref%255F%3Dnb%255Fss%26y%3D0%26field-keywords%3De5300%26url%3Dsearch-alias%253Daps&amp;tag=markmccall&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;camp=1634&amp;creative=19450\">2.60GHz Intel Pentium Dual-Core E5300<\/a>.\u00a0 It provides a good balance between power and economy and provides an enormous increase in grunt for the server.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"100% CPU Utilisation\" src=\"\/images\/news\/jb1_100cpu.png\" alt=\"100% CPU Utilisation\" width=\"481\" height=\"176\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" \/><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">The Old Server was severely underpowered for anything past basic file serving<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/gp\/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&amp;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.co.uk%2Fs%3Fie%3DUTF8%26x%3D0%26ref%255F%3Dnb%255Fss%26y%3D0%26field-keywords%3Dasus%2520P5Q%2520Deluxe%26url%3Dsearch-alias%253Daps&amp;tag=markmccall&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;camp=1634&amp;creative=19450\">ASUS P5Q Deluxe<\/a> motherboard we chose supports Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad processors too, giving a relatively inexpensive and simple upgrade path if we get serious about running <a href=\"Reviews\/Going-Virtual-A-Home-Server-Experience.html\">virtual servers<\/a> on this box in the future.<\/div>\n<p>We fitted 4GB of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/gp\/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&amp;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.co.uk%2Fs%3Fie%3DUTF8%26x%3D0%26ref%255F%3Dnb%255Fss%26y%3D0%26field-keywords%3DKingston%2520HyperX%26url%3Dsearch-alias%253Daps&amp;tag=markmccall&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;camp=1634&amp;creative=19450\">Kingston HyperX DDR2<\/a> RAM and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/gp\/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&amp;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.co.uk%2Fs%3Fie%3DUTF8%26x%3D0%26ref%255F%3Dnb%255Fss%26y%3D0%26field-keywords%3DCorsair%2520power%2520supply%26url%3Dsearch-alias%253Daps&amp;tag=markmccall&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;camp=1634&amp;creative=19450\">Corsair HX 450W PSU<\/a>.\u00a0 This is the first time we&#8217;ve used a branded power supply in a build and is definitely worth a mention.\u00a0 For a few pounds more this really is a quality item.\u00a0 Sturdy build quality, ultra-quiet, huge range of connectors and with sockets meaning you only plug in the Molex, SATA Power and Floppy connectors you actually need.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"PSU Sockets\" src=\"\/images\/news\/jb2_psu_sockets.jpg\" alt=\"PSU Sockets\" width=\"400\" height=\"306\" \/><\/div>\n<p>Unlike the VIA EPIA board that powered the old server the Asus does not have built in graphics, but our spares box had plenty of old cards to choose from.\u00a0 The new hardware includes gigabit Ethernet ports so the server can take advantage of our recently upgrade <a href=\"New-Products\/Upgrading-Your-Home-Network-to-Gigabit.html\">gigabit Ethernet switch<\/a>.\u00a0 The eSATA port allows for future expansion outside the case too and firewire and USB ports are always useful.\u00a0 We&#8217;ve also moved from a board with a single slot to one with a variety of PCI and PCI Express slots, also allowing for the addition of more controllers and port expansion cards if necessary.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/news\/jb2_wireframe.png\" alt=\" \" width=\"303\" height=\"366\" align=\"right\" \/><strong>Windows Home Server<\/strong> &#8211; The old server has run vanilla Windows XP Pro and been rock solid.\u00a0 We&#8217;re sticking with Redmond and installed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/gp\/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&amp;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.co.uk%2Fs%3Fie%3DUTF8%26x%3D0%26ref%255F%3Dnb%255Fss%26y%3D0%26field-keywords%3Dwindows%2520home%2520server%26url%3Dsearch-alias%253Daps&amp;tag=markmccall&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;camp=1634&amp;creative=19450\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Windows Home Server<\/a>.\u00a0 WHS is based on Windows 2003 Server with its code and features optimised for use in the home and a user limited of 10.<\/p>\n<p>We retained the most modern of the IDE disks from the old server (400GB) and installed it in one of the internal bays in the case for use as the OS \/ Boot drive.\u00a0 The install process is the normal Microsoft affair and takes around an hour.\u00a0 After that there&#8217;s the usual raft of critical updates, patches and optional software to install.\u00a0 Many hours and reboots later we were up and running with the latest Power Pack \/ Service Pack 2 (PowerPack 3 is due out of beta anytime soon and brings support for Windows 7).<\/p>\n<p>As many people who have been using a home server over the last few years know, once a drive holding say your CD rips is full, you are faced with a messy upgrade.\u00a0 With a regular desktop OS and no RAID setup, adding a new disk usually means adding additional shares, perhaps &#8216;Music1&#8217; is joined by &#8216;Music2&#8217; in the example above.\u00a0 This <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/JBOD#JBOD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">JBOD<\/a> setup is far from ideal, especially if you then have to reconfigure all your clients around the home like XBMC, Sonos etc to see the additional music.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not long before you have all sorts of shares, scattered across all sorts of drives.<\/p>\n<p>The advantage of WHS in this setup is that the smarts behind the scenes make all your drives appear as one large &#8216;storage pool&#8217;.\u00a0 Each new drive added simply increases the overall capacity of the pool creating more space for your existing Music or Movies or Photos shares, without ever having to create and manage new folders or re-configure the clients accessing them.<\/p>\n<p>As WHS formats each new drive when it&#8217;s added to the system pool, you can&#8217;t simply take NTFS drives full of data from an old machine and put them into a new WHS one.\u00a0 Although this wasn&#8217;t an issue for us as we weren&#8217;t re-using the old drives, its worth noting as you may need to buy a new drive or two if you are.<\/p>\n<p>Like Drobo, and unlike RAID this setup doesn&#8217;t care about mixing different drive sizes and models either.\u00a0 As long as you have empty drive bays, upgrading space is the 5-minute task of popping in a new disk.\u00a0 Once all your bays are full then its time to remove and upgrade a disk for a larger capacity model.\u00a0 This involves designating a disk for removal, requiring you to have enough space across your other drives to store its data, or if not then the temporary use of an external drive.\u00a0 For this reason it&#8217;s best not to wait until your drives are full before upgrading to a larger one.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Management<\/strong> &#8211; A few weeks ago we ran a story on a particularly impressive <a href=\"Announcements\/Automated-Home-Readers-20-Terabyte-Home-Server-Photos.html\">20 terabyte home server<\/a> belonging to one Automated Home reader.\u00a0 Looking at his setup we made sure to install the excellent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tentaclesoftware.com\/WHSDiskManagement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Disk Management add-in<\/a>.\u00a0 Amongst other things this allows you to create a wire frame graphical representation of your server.\u00a0 You need to do this right at the start though, then add disks one by one so you record where each physical drive is in your system.\u00a0 It&#8217;s then trivial to identify a drive if there&#8217;s a problem or it needs replaced.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\"  id=\"_ytid_45931\"  width=\"480\" height=\"360\"  data-origwidth=\"480\" data-origheight=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/B3tyK96FaQ4?enablejsapi=1&#038;autoplay=0&#038;cc_load_policy=0&#038;cc_lang_pref=&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;loop=0&#038;modestbranding=0&#038;rel=1&#038;fs=1&#038;playsinline=0&#038;autohide=2&#038;theme=dark&#038;color=red&#038;controls=1&#038;\" class=\"__youtube_prefs__  epyt-is-override  no-lazyload\" title=\"YouTube player\"  allow=\"fullscreen; accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen data-no-lazy=\"1\" data-skipgform_ajax_framebjll=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Simply clicking on the drive in the left pane will highlight where it is in the wireframe on the right by turning green.\u00a0 The Add-in also reports other useful information such as drive temperature and speed of throughput.\u00a0 We also installed the WHS Mobile Add-in, which in conjunction with its iPhone App (Windows Mobile version available too) gives us access to the server while we&#8217;re on the move.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Old IDE Hard Drives\" src=\"\/images\/news\/jb2_old_Drives.jpg\" alt=\"Old IDE Hard Drives\" width=\"250\" height=\"367\" align=\"left\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"5\" \/><strong>The Move<\/strong> &#8211; Once the server was up and running and the new SATA drives were installed and setup in Disk Manager, we started the &#8216;character building&#8217; task of copying the data across from the old drives.\u00a0 Moving large amounts of data around is never fun and this was no exception, taking a couple of days to complete.\u00a0 The data on the IDE disks can be copied across to the server using the motherboards built in IDE line or if your system doesn&#8217;t have it you can use an inexpensive <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/gp\/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&amp;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.co.uk%2Fs%3Fie%3DUTF8%26rs%3D%26ref%255F%3Dsr%255Fnr%255Fi%255F0%26keywords%3Dide%2520to%2520usb%26qid%3D1255596588%26rh%3Di%253Aaps%252Ck%253Aide%2520to%2520usb%252Ci%253Aelectronics&amp;tag=markmccall&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;camp=1634&amp;creative=19450\">IDE to USB 2.0 interface<\/a> instead.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Its Good to Share<\/strong> &#8211; Shares appear in standard <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Path_%28computing%29#Uniform_Naming_Convention\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UNC<\/a> format &#8211;\u00a0 \/\/servername\/sharename &#8211; for example \/\/JukeBox\/Movies or \/\/JukeBox\/Music,\u00a0 The Samba shares can also easily be accessed from Macs or Linux machines using\u00a0 &#8211; smb:\/\/JukeBox\/Music or smb:\/\/192.168.0.10\/Movies etc.\u00a0 Each user can be allowed full access, read only access or no access at all for each of your shares.\u00a0 You can give your children read only access to the music share for example, allowing them to listen, whilst being secure in the knowledge they can&#8217;t accidentally delete something.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Flexible Friend<\/strong> &#8211; While you can run a limited set of apps on a Drobo and other NAS devices can run services too, there&#8217;s little to beat the sheer volume of windows applications out there.\u00a0 You can pretty much run any Windows app you want on this system.\u00a0 This gives us a huge choice of media encoders, FTP server software, Bit Torrent clients and the like that we can run on this box too, all easily managed from anywhere either on the LAN or across the Net.<\/p>\n<p>WHS offers other useful features such as a web interface to your server and windows computers on your home LAN.\u00a0 You can control the console remotely, managing your media.\u00a0 Need to access a file from a friends house? Want to play that CD you ripped at home last night in work? Uploading or downloading files from your server is trivial from any other machine with Internet access.<\/p>\n<p>All these remote features can be setup automatically for you with uPnP or if your router doesn&#8217;t support it or your prefer a manual setup then you can simply <strong>forward ports 80, 443 and 4125<\/strong> to your servers IP.\u00a0 Even if you don&#8217;t have a static IP address at home WHS allows you to always connect to your machine remotely from a simple and memorable address which you get to choose &#8211; http:\/\/YOUR-CHOSEN-NAME.homeserver.com<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"\/images\/news\/jb2_whsscreen.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"WHS Web Interface\" src=\"\/images\/news\/jb2_whsscreen_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"WHS Web Interface\" width=\"200\" height=\"142\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a> \u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"\/images\/news\/jb2_whslogin.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"WHS Login Screen\" src=\"\/images\/news\/jb2_whslogin_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"WHS Login Screen\" width=\"200\" height=\"139\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nClick thumbnails above for full size versions<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Connector <\/strong>&#8211; If you have other XP\/Vista\/Windows7 PCs on your LAN then installing the WHS &#8216;Connector&#8217; software on them will automatically link them to the server, putting a short cut to its shares on their desktop and setting up automated backups.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Single-instance_storage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">single-instance storage<\/a>&#8216; technology means that WHS will only hold one set of files for an OS and thereby reducing space requirements.\u00a0 We backed up two similar XP Pro machines.\u00a0 The first backup took up 7.6GB.\u00a0 We then backed up the second machine which only added an additional 2GB to the backup folder on the server.<\/p>\n<p>Files and folders can be easily restored from these backups.\u00a0 You can also restore an entire machine by booting from a CD and sucking the image back from the server across the LAN.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re a Windows household then automated backups feature is probably worth the WHS price of admission alone.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"WHS Duplication \" src=\"\/images\/news\/jb2_pie.png\" alt=\"WHS Duplication \" width=\"247\" height=\"302\" align=\"left\" \/><strong>Backup Buddy<\/strong> &#8211; You can designate any of your WHS shared folders for &#8220;Duplication&#8221;.\u00a0 This ensures those directories are stored on 2 physical disks, allowing your data to survive a single hard drive failure.\u00a0 You may not want to duplicate your DVD ISO&#8217;s for example, preferring to re-rip them rather than take up the additional space required to protect them.\u00a0 We have chosen to duplicate all our data \/ documents folders and all our digital photos and that&#8217;s currently taking up almost 800GB as can be seen in the nice clear pie chart graphic WHS produces in the Console.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve heard enough stories on our <a href=\"http:\/\/groups.yahoo.com\/group\/ukha_d\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mailing list<\/a> to make the TV show &#8211; &#8216;When RAID Goes Bad&#8217;, users that have lost everything when one drive dies rather than being able to rebuild their array.\u00a0 So whilst having duplication is a good thing, and probably more than a lot of users have currently, you still need a backup at a different location to protect yourself against a catastrophic hardware failure or even theft, fire, flood etc.<\/p>\n<p>Backing up the WHS system drive seems to be the weak link in the current version.\u00a0 From what we can see there&#8217;s no easy way to do this, bar having a separate RAID 1 system just for it.\u00a0 The partnership between the C: partition and the D: storage pool partition needs to be in sync, so imaging the OS drive with Acronis \/ Ghost or similar will be out of date and therefore useless shortly after it&#8217;s been done.<\/p>\n<p>However if the system disk does die you should be able to install a new version of WHS on a new disk which will then re-gain you access your un-harmed data, albeit with the loss of any add-ins or other customisation to WHS you had.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\u00a0<a href=\"\/images\/news\/jb2_backups.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"WHS Backup Screen\" src=\"\/images\/news\/jb2_backups_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"WHS Backup Screen\" width=\"200\" height=\"140\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a> \u00a0 <a href=\"\/images\/news\/jb2_disk_management.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"WHS Disk Managment Add-in Screen\" src=\"\/images\/news\/jb2_disk_management_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"WHS Disk Managment Add-in Screen\" border=\"0\" \/>\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"\/images\/news\/jb2_storage.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"WHS Storage Screen\" src=\"\/images\/news\/jb2_storage_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"WHS Storage Screen\" border=\"0\" \/> \u00a0 <\/a><a href=\"\/images\/news\/jb2_disk_info.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"WHS Disk Info Screen\" src=\"\/images\/news\/jb2_disk_info_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"WHS Disk Info Screen\" width=\"200\" height=\"140\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nClick thumbnails above for full size versions<\/p>\n<p><strong>Green Credentials?<\/strong> &#8211;
