{"id":63403,"date":"2024-07-03T10:17:11","date_gmt":"2024-07-03T09:17:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/automatedhome.com\/?p=63403"},"modified":"2024-07-06T05:14:43","modified_gmt":"2024-07-06T04:14:43","slug":"lg-acquires-a-controlling-stake-in-athom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/automatedhome.com\/news\/lg-acquires-a-controlling-stake-in-athom.html","title":{"rendered":"LG acquires a controlling stake in Athom"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>News is breaking that Korean LG (stock XKRX) has acquired 80% of Dutch Athom B.V. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/mobile.koreatimes.co.kr\/www\/tech\/2024\/07\/419_377917.html\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/mobile.koreatimes.co.kr\/www\/tech\/2024\/07\/419_377917.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Korea Times<\/a>, financial details of the deal haven&#8217;t been disclosed, but LG is set to acquire 80% of Athom immediately with plans to acquire the remaining 20% over 3 years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Athom are the makers of the much-loved Homey Pro smart home hubs. I personally recently bought a Homey Pro as part of my first steps into building out a smarter home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Korea Times articles went on to include &#8220;LG Electronics said it plans to create AI-operated homes that understand customers&#8217; needs and provide optimal solutions through the purchase of Athom. This will be achieved by leveraging Athom&#8217;s connectivity and integrating generative AI into LG&#8217;s ThinQ platform.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\"  id=\"_ytid_46205\"  width=\"480\" height=\"270\"  data-origwidth=\"480\" data-origheight=\"270\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/q683m5JkvzE?enablejsapi=1&#038;autoplay=0&#038;cc_load_policy=0&#038;cc_lang_pref=&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;loop=0&#038;modestbranding=0&#038;rel=1&#038;fs=1&#038;playsinline=0&#038;autohide=2&#038;theme=dark&#038;color=red&#038;controls=1&#038;\" class=\"__youtube_prefs__  epyt-is-override  no-lazyload\" title=\"YouTube player\"  allow=\"fullscreen; accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen data-no-lazy=\"1\" data-skipgform_ajax_framebjll=\"\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Digging for more info on the LG\/Athom deal.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Implications<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s too early to say what this means long term, but if I had to bet, I would say this is good news for anyone already bought in to the Homey ecosystem. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the backing of LG, it seems likely that Homey will be planning for greater distribution and deeper pockets for support and developing the product roadmap. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Making a splash<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With the acquisition of Athom, LG are making a statement about the importance of the smart home for their business. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They no doubt see opportunities for deeper integrations, better distribution and acquiring the existing Athom intellectual property rather than building from scratch. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a customer who recently bought a Homey Pro (I haven&#8217;t set it up yet, stay tuned), this seems like very good news for the future viability of Homey. I guess we&#8217;ll have to see how it all plays out, but I think this makes Homey an even bigger contender in the smart home hub\/ecosystem market. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, there have been plenty of products and brands that were acquired by large companies only to be sent to the dark corner of a basement, but this doesn&#8217;t feel like one of those situations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Congratulations to everyone involved in the deal and here&#8217;s hoping Homey soars to new heights on the back of this deal (even if the LG stock price didn&#8217;t think much of the news!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-fusebox-player-single\"><script data-type=\"track\" data-hash=\"1Vx6MBkWB9\" data-track=\"2\" src=\"https:\/\/app.fusebox.fm\/embed\/player.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News is breaking that Korean LG (stock XKRX) has acquired 80% of Dutch Athom B.V.
